Celebrating Culture Locally and Around the World

Friday's activities included a trip to the World A'Fair, where we saw the local Slavic Club do some traditional BiH dances!
Friday and Saturday were busy days! For Nikola and I, Friday started off before The Entrepreneurs Center class began, as we participated in the Five Rivers MetroParks "Bike to Work" Day. Both of us caught both of our pancakes when they flipped them to us!

Nikola and I were hungry...
The pancake flippers were back! You have to catch your pancake on your plate when they flip it to you. Neither of us dropped ours :)
After that, it was a short ride down Monument St. to TEC, where the day's activities focused on opportunity recognition. The students worked to identify (literally) hundreds of ideas for businesses by figuring out what "grinds their gears" and scanning the newspaper for problems that need to be solved. As Scott said, some were great, others not so great, but many have the potential to be viable!
Students talk with Scott about what they learned today.
Also during the day, the students had a chance to visit the 444 building, TEC's future home, which will be shared with people from the Air Force Research Lab in what is becoming a new "downtown innovation district" in Dayton. Learn more about this collaboration here. Would also like to thank South Park Tavern for providing us (and sponsoring) pizza today, it was delicious!
Students also visited the 444 building, a shared space that TEC is moving into soon!
After that, we had two hours to kill before heading to World A'Fair (thanks to the folks from the local Slavic club for getting us tickets!) We filled the time by exploring downtown Dayton. Some of the students went out biking using our local Link Bikeshare 24-hour passes, while I took Edna and Ana to see some cool places that are unique to Dayton.

Said hello to the Wright Brothers downtown...
Stopped into the Engineers Club of Dayton to see some of the "made first in Dayton" artifacts, including the first pop top can opener and the first cash register!
Also paid homage to Nikola Tesla!
Next up was the Dayton Visual Arts Center, where Amanda's professor Glen Cebulash had a display up.
The coolest thing was the cigarette dispenser turned art dispenser, where we got some oragami art!
It was raining at this point, so we stopped at the Racquet Club to take in the view of the city.
After that it was off to World A'Fair, where we stopped first at the Slavic Club. Everyone was super excited to see people from Bosnia & Herzegovina!
Nikola and Rijad got hugs right away :)
We would like to thank the South Slavic Club for providing us tickets to get into the event! We had a great time!
Had to get a picture in front of the South Slavic Peoples booth! I bought Cevapcici, of course!
After that we checked out the main stage, where different countries went up to perform traditional dances.
We were most excited to see the Slavic dancers!
Rijad was probably the most excited of them all!
After that it was off for more food from around the world!
We also went over to the second stage, where the younger Slavic dancers were showing off their footwork.

The night ended with some karaoke!

Saturday began a bit later, except for Dario and Nikola. Both of them volunteered to spend their time this morning helping a good friend who is fighting cancer, Kristin Wicker, by doing some yard work. They heard that she had visited Bosnia & Herzegovina last year and wanted to stop by and help, so they put them to work!
They took a quick break when I asked to take a photo, but otherwise were working hard the whole time :)

Most of the group met up next at Second Street Market, where we had lunch and did some shopping.

The crepes were a big hit!

The jazz music was a hit too!
Had to get the obligatory Dayton picture...
Next it was off to the Boonshoft Museum, where we visited the zoo and checked out the Planetarium.

Checking out the poison dart frogs
And the chameleon.
Before the show in the planetarium.

Finally, we ended the day in Yellow Springs, where we did some hiking/exploring, shopping, and eating (Mateo finally got to try some American pizza too!)
We made it to the Yellow Spring!
Not as impressive as the one in Mostar, but it's still a nice spot!

Tried a little bit of the local cuisine at a food truck.
And checked out the shops! We even had a Dave Chappelle sighting at Dino's!
After visiting the village for a while, we traveled up the road to Young's Dairy for some batting cage and driving range practice. It was a first time for our friends from BiH, all of whom did really well!

Dario crushing the baseball at the batting cages.

Gloria too.
Nikola and Dario getting ready to nail the ball picker-upper guy.
Mateo working on his stance.
Amanda was the golf pro and taught Ana and others how to swing.
Driving range: conquered.
Finally, the day ended with some ice cream back in Yellow Springs!
Line for Young's was pretty long, so we went back to Yellow Springs!
A great end to a fun day.
Tomorrow's agenda ~ the U.S. Air Force Museum and Packy's bar/restaurant, the site of many of the negotiations for the Dayton Peace Accords!
